Lack Of Sleep Can Kill
I received an article with the above subject title.
My first reaction was ... "Of course ! ... lack of sleep can lead to tiredness & if you're not careful while driving, chances are you'll end up with a fatal accident.
But when I really read through the article ... it's from a different angle altogether. Below is the excerpt (in Italics) :
A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road. Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.
It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner ( in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.
Was it the stress?
A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.
The Real Reason
However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out': Boss' Day Out: Ranjan Das of SAP India.
Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep ( and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled ).
The Evidence
Last week, I was working with a well-known cardiologist on the subject of ‘Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep’. While I cannot share the video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our lives.
Some Excerpts:
· Short sleep duration ( <5 or 5-6 hours ) increased risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night. Paper published in 2009. As you know, high BP kills.
· Young people ( 25-49 years of age ) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.
· Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.
· Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!
· Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Paper published in 2004.
· Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.
Ideal Sleep
For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement ) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.
The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.
For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess ( lack of non-REM sleep ), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down ( I’ve been there, done that ).
Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.
If you want to know if you are getting adequate sleep, take Epworth Sleepiness Test below.
Interpretation: Score of 0-9 is considered normal while 10 and above abnormal. Many a times, I have clocked 21 out the maximum possible 24, the only saving grace being the last situation, since I don’t like to drive (maybe, I should ask my driver to answer that line).
In conclusion:
Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising ( marathoning! ), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him.
If you are not getting enough sleep ( 7 hours ), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress.
I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse to get some more sleep.
Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail/article to as many of your colleagues/friends as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young life because of this email, I would be the happiest person on earth.

Sprechen sie Engrish ?
Speaking English ... anyone ?
I knew all along that the standard of English in the country has deteriorated somewhat since the late 70s.
But I was really "shocked & awed" by its level, after reading this article below (which I "copied" from Malaysia Today's homepage).
Why English should not be taught in Bahasa Malaysia
There is currently a brouhaha going on about the proposed teaching of Science and Maths in English. Some would like these two subjects to be taught in Bahasa Malaysia. I am not too concerned about Science and Maths. I am more worried about English. I feel English should no longer be taught in Bahasa Malaysia.
NO HOLDS BARRED Raja Petra Kamarudin
And why do I think that English should not be taught in Bahasa Malaysia? Well, maybe this circular from one of Malaysia’s leading universities would explain everything.

Well, I was laughing out loud initially but on 2nd thought, this is really sad. And to think that my children will go through all this crap ... (sigh) .... it's really sickening. Guess I really need to plan out for their education.
Anyway, on the lighter side, below is another "joke" from a commentor to the article above.
Hope you have a good laugh but on the flip side, think about your children's education too.

Hilarious, allow me to share a joke I received by email (author unknown) that also illustrates the point "Why English should not be taught in Bahasa Malaysia" or for that matter "Why Bahasa Malaysia should not be taught in English"
Breaking up letter.

Scams in Malaysia
Now, the Company has STOPPED paying commissions and interests to members with the excuse that the Singapore government has freezed their bank account while under investigation. Do you think their boss will be so stupid to keep much monies in the bank to be freezed ? They are all transfered away. It’s just an excuses not to pay back to members and members are only paid “e-bonus-points” which is cashless. If they wish to convert to cash, they have to recruit new members to pay them cash and the recruiter less out trom the amount. So victims act like Vampires and “forced” to victimise other victims if they wish to get their monies back. And their victims will later transform to vampires and the scam carries on…..
Alkaline Products - Can anyone explain how it can work for the body ? The stomach’s gastric liquid is so acidic that water of any pH that goes through it will not make any difference.

Battle of Red Cliffs ( 赤 壁 之 战 )
At the point of my writing, I have yet to watch Part 2. I am eagerly waiting for the scene on the fire attack on Cao Cao’s chained battleships.
Anyway, let’s see what had happened that builds up to this famous battle in the era of Three Kingdoms. We start off by understanding the situation that led to the division or the disintegration of the preceding dynasty, the Han.
Within the first twenty-seven months after Qin Dynasty Emperor Qin Shi Huang's (秦始皇) death at Shaqiu (沙球), widespread revolts by peasants, prisoners, soldiers and descendants of the nobles of the six Warring States sprang up all over China. Chen Sheng (陈胜) and Wu Guang (吴广) two in a group of about 900 soldiers assigned to defend against the Xiongnu (匈奴族) they were the leaders of the first rebellion.
The earlier, "unofficial" part of the period, from 190 to 220, was marked by chaotic infighting between warlords in various parts of China. The middle part of the period, from 220 and 263, was marked by a more militarily stable arrangement between three rival states, Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu. The later part of this period was marked by the collapse of the tripartite situation: first the destruction of Shu by Wei (263), then the overthrow of Wei by the Jin Dynasty (265), and the destruction of Wu by Jin (280).
Battle of Red Cliffs ( 赤 壁 之 战 )
Meanwhile Cao Cao had captured the strategic centre and military depot of Jiangling (江凌), and harbored his massive fleet there. The combined Sun-Liu force sailed upstream to Red Cliffs, where they encountered Cao Cao's courier force. After a mild skirmish, both sides temporarily ceased activity - with Cao camped northern of the Yangtze River and the allies in the south. Cao Cao boasted a troop of 150,000 men, this was probably true as there is no evidence to suggest some other figure, he also had a sizeable cavalry and naval division. Zhou Yu had around 30,000 marines whilst the exiled Liu Bei managed around 20,000.
The decisive blow to Cao came shortly afterwards, though the sources vary on whether Liu or Sun struck it. The most detailed account comes from the biography of Zhou Yu, which details how the Sun commander Huang Gai (黄盖) planned an attack on Cao Cao with fireships.
The source tells of the devastation wrought in the Cao’s camp by the fires. In any case, a general order of retreat was given to Cao's troop, and it is likely that the northerners destroyed a number of their own ships during the retreat. There are hints that the northerners were at the time already plagued by disease and low morale.
Alright, so much for History 101. I am looking forward to watching Part 2 of the series. Hopefully, it is more exciting than Part 1.

What Goes Up Must Come Down
Table 1 : Newtonian Physics w.r.t the stock market
Date : Mar 14th, 2009
On planet Earth, where Law of Physics governs how the natural world works ….. from electro-magnetic field due to Earth’s rotation, gravity, motions, electronics …. you name it, the Law of Physics has a part in it.
Now, let’s take a look at one of the most famous Laws in Physics ……..the Newton’s Law of Motion.
Newton's laws of motion are three physical laws that form the basis for classical mechanics, directly relating the forces acting on a body to the motion of the body. They were first compiled by Sir Isaac Newton in his work Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, first published on July 5, 1687. Newton used them to explain and investigate the motion of many physical objects and systems. For example, in the third volume of the text, Newton showed that these laws of motion, combined with his law of universal gravitation, explained Kepler's laws of planetary motion.
There exists a set of inertial reference frames relative to which all particles with no net force acting on them will move without change in their velocity. This law is often simplified as "A body persists its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force." Newton's first law is often referred to as the law of inertia. So in other words "every object in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force."
Observed from an inertial reference frame, the net force on a particle of constant mass is proportional to the time rate of change of its linear momentum: F = d(mv)/dt. This law is often stated as, "Force equals mass times acceleration (F = ma)": the net force on an object is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by its acceleration.
Whenever a particle A exerts a force on another particle B, B simultaneously exerts a force on A with the same magnitude in the opposite direction. The strong form of the law further postulates that these two forces act along the same line. This law is often simplified into the sentence, "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Or in other words, "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."
Let’s see if this also applies to our stock market, the barometer of the state of economies of the country …. at least the perceived barometer for most people.

Even old men need to keep growing - A Kaizen Story Made Simple
Now for those who do not know this gentleman in the picture, he's Jack Welch, former CEO of one of the most successful organization in the world .... General Electric (GE).
Welch gained a solid reputation for uncanny business acumen and unique leadership strategies at GE. He remains a highly-regarded figure in business circles due to his innovative management strategies and leadership style.
Not surprisingly, his net worth is estimated at $720 million ! So, what has Kaizen to do with Jack Welch ?
I came across this interesting article in The Star online by Roshan Thiran, which I'm going to re-produce here :
CALL it crazy, paranoia or kiasu but for Toyota employees it’s a crisis if they do not create improvement each day. The “kaizen mind” means there is only one way to move – forward.
So everyday, whether you’re a line worker or management executive, you have to find ways to change what you’re doing so you do it better. In fact some years back, Hiroshi Okuda, the then chairman of Toyota Motor Corp proclaimed: “Failure to change is a vice.”
In less than two decades, Toyota has gone from a laughing stock in America to the world’s largest and most successful automobile manufacturer. It consistently outsells Ford and General Motors – thoroughbred American brands who are struggling to stem market share losses – and its Lexus was the top-selling luxury brand in America for six years consecutively. It’s borderline obsession but given the results, I’m not about to knock it!
Kaizen is not a proprietary Toyota secret. Change, growth, improvement, innovation … these are just different monikers for essentially the same thing – keep changing the game and keep moving, improving and growing. Grow, grow, grow. Every successful company is dedicated to this pursuit of continuous growth and improvement, and the same can be said of great leaders and great people as well.
In my experience working and observing great leaders at GE and Johnson & Johnson in the US, Europe and more recently in Asia, one key trait of great leaders is their appetite for continuously learning and growing. Leaders never stop learning and growing because when that happens, they stop being leaders. Great leaders are always listening and watching in the hope of learning new ideas, new thoughts and discovering new truths and realities for themselves. Great leaders, regardless of their age, always have a hunger for learning and this drives their growth and that of their organisations.
The desire and ability to keep growing has always been the hallmark of leadership. I saw this firsthand from Jack Welch’s initial rejection of the Internet to his total embracement of it.
Now, Jack never was a great fan of the World Wide Web. He may have understood its strategic value and implications to the future but he never really showed it vis-a-vis his numerous initiatives and strategic directions. Of course, this was back in the early nineties when General Electric was very much a brick and mortar business dealing with physical estates like appliances, jet engines and plastics, and providing services like financing, credit cards and media.
Outside bits of NBC (the media arm) and GE Capital (its then financial services arm), GE at large showed no appetite for the Internet or leveraging it.
Then in the late 90s, Jack made a drastic about-turn and completely changed its web game and strategy. One day, he asks GE CIO Gary Reiner to provide someone from the group’s IT department to be sent over to teach him about the Internet. I think many of the IT folks in Fairfield Connecticut (GE’s HQ in the US) feared for their lives! What if Jack asked them an IT question that they could not answer. But someone volunteered and started teaching Jack about the Internet.
For a few weeks, Jack breathed and lived the Internet. When Jack learns, he really learns. He wasn’t interested to just shop online or dabble in virtual reality; he wanted to know the whole works. You have to remember that at the time, Jack was just a few years to retirement. It was in the late 90s and he was about to hand the reins of the company to a new guy named Jeff Immelt.
He had just transformed GE into the most admired company in the world and he himself was declared the most respected CEO in the world. Yet, he didn’t think he was above learning something new. He showed amazing appetite to learn about the Internet and within a few months could get away with talking like one of the tech guys!
When news made its way through the GE grapevine, most of us couldn’t understand why an “old” man would bother learning at this stage of his life. He had after all made it in life, so why bother? Jack could have easily retired on a high note and let the next guy figure out the Internet and its implications. But that’s the thing about great leaders – they never know when to stop learning. They never stop learning.
What precipitated this change of heart? Online shopping, apparently. The story, as the legend goes, was that Jack had gone home one day and found his then wife, Jane, on the computer. It was so uncharacteristic of her that Jack had to find out what she was doing. As it turns out, she was shopping. He could not believe that you could shop online and so she showed him how it worked by ordering a set of golf clubs for him (so the story goes!). That just blew him away.
Immediately Jack wanted to learn about the power of the Internet. And he then proceeded to set up new companies with the sole purpose of “destroying” their bricks and mortar equivalent by building new Internet-based businesses. In fact, he named them “DestroyYourBusiness.com”!
This was implemented across all GE business units like “DestroyYourBusiness.com_Plastics” and so on. The new CEOs of these dot-com entities were tasked with converting the sales functions of the traditional GE businesses from old methods to e-commerce.
More than five years on, GE’s aviation business, its biggest brick and mortar business, now sells almost all its spare parts and a number of other items online, thanks to DestroyYourBusiness.com Aviation. Not many people would have thought aircraft engine sales could be done online but it happened and they sell millions in a click! Functions like parts ordering to customer service and even dealings with vendors are done through GE’s IT infrastructure.
Jack’s desire to learn is insatiable. At a few years shy of retirement, he was still willing to shake things up and push the company towards new, untested waters. Is it any wonder that his name is almost synonymous with leadership? It all really begins with having a constant hunger to learn and be willing to learn from anyone … even from your spouse! Jack did. Yes, even old men need to keep growing.
There you have it .... imagine this ... creating a BU called Destroy Your Business.com within your core business units (BU). Now, that's really "Leadership". No wonder GE was rated 'Most Admired Company' under his watch.
Hats off to this guy ....and one of my wishes for 2009 ....is that the executives from the US banking industry can learn a thing or two from this great leader. These financial institutions definitely has a major role to play in the economic revival of the US.
Happy New Year 2009
